What is Interjection

An interjection is a word that expresses strong feelings and emotions. Although they are considered one of the eight parts of speech, they are not grammatically related to a sentence, unlike other parts of speech. An interjection can show a wide variety of emotions such as anger, surprise, joy, disgust and excitement. Since interjections express strong feelings and emotions, they are mostly used in informal language.

Interjections can be in the form of a single word, phrase, or even a short clause. They are mostly used at the beginning of sentences.

Sounds (oops, mmmm, phew, ah, etc.), introductory expressions (yes, no, well, indeed, etc.), adjectives (nice, pretty, awesome, etc.) and nouns can act as interjections.

What is Interjection

Oops!

You might have noticed that different interjections use different punctuation marks. This is because different interjections express different emotions.

Exclamation Mark: Exclamation mark is the most commonly used punctuation with interjections. It is used to express strong emotions like excitement and anger.

Eww! Are you going to eat that?

Comma: Commas are used to express weaker emotions.

Ah, that feels good.

Question Mark: Question marks are used to express uncertainty or disbelief.

Oh really? I never thought she would do something like that.

Although interjections may seem to be an insignificant part of grammar, this is a very important part of grammar since it can be difficult to express feelings and emotions in written language.
