Xyzal vs Zyrtec
Sometimes when we eat some foods, we get to itching after a few minutes. Is this a sign of allergy? Yes. Most of the foods people are allergic to are seafoods such as fish, shrimp, clams, etc. People are also allergy to eggs, either egg whites or egg yolks. In babies starting to wean from milk, cereals are first introduced for one week then followed by fruits, vegetables, egg white, egg yolk, meat, and so on and so forth. Each of the said foods have a one-week interval to assess whether these foods will make the baby allergic or not. They should be administered one at a time.
When allergies occur, there are medications which can help us alleviate the itchiness. These are called antihistamines. Two of these are Xyzal and Zyrtec. Let us tackle the differences.
The generic name of Zyrtec is Cetirizine while the generic name of Xyzal is Levocetirizine. These two medications are being slowly recognized in the market. These two medications are antihistamines. These medications act on the histamine receptors which cause allergic reactions. By blocking the histamine receptors, the allergy is being stopped. The usual symptoms of allergy are itchiness, sneezing, hives, urticaria, and watery eyes.
One of the said differences of Xyzal from Zyrtec is that Xyzal is said to bind more effectively in the receptor sites. Another difference is that Xyzal has instructions regarding its use on children and infants up to six months of age which is good. Zyrtec does not have any instructions for use for young children.
With or without food these two medications can be taken. Zyrtec has a chewable form while Xyzal does not. Thus, this medication should be chewed so that the fullest effect would take place. Both have liquid preparations, but a measuring spoon should be used for accurate dosing of the drug.
Zyrtec and Xyzal have the usual side effects. Besides drowsiness and a dry mouth, sore throat and weakness may also occur. Xyzal usually has more adverse effects than Zyrtec and causes hepatic problems such as jaundice, dark-colored urine, and sometimes epistaxis (nosebleed) among children. Zyrtec’s side effects may include heart effects such as palpitations, confusion, and restlessness.
When taking antihistamines, always keep in mind that one should avoid in engaging in such activities such as driving, cooking, operating machines, and all other activities that can cause accidents.
