Xanax vs Zoloft

Depression is most often evident in a percentage of the population. Though it cannot be prevented, we humans can always consider a problem as a big deal or not. It’s up to us whether we’ll take it seriously or not. Some problems, however, are too traumatic to an individual such as heartaches, failures, and so on and so forth.

At these times, for those who are chronically depressed for months without a change in their condition, they are always referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist for medical intervention. These physicians who specialize in emotional abnormalities may help them at these difficult times.

Two of the most common medications being prescribed are Xanax and Zoloft. Let us try to discriminate between these two drugs.

Alprazolam is the generic name of Xanax. Sertraline is the generic name of Zoloft. Xanax is categorized under benzodiazepines while Zoloft is categorized under SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Xanax and Zoloft work the same in inhibiting depression by the production of the happy hormone which is serotonin and allaying anxiety.

Xanax is generally used in anxiety disorders such as panic attacks and depression. This drug may cause birth defects so it is advised to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Alcohol is also prohibited when taking this drug because it is a benzodiazepine. Zoloft, on the other hand, is generally prescribed for depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic attacks, and PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder.

One is advised not to take these drugs if one is allergic to medications. If you are taking Zoloft, you should not take MAOI drugs as this may cause an adverse drug-drug interaction. When under Xanax, one should avoid operating heavy machinery and driving cars as this causes mild drowsiness. Liver and kidney problems must be assessed also when taking Zoloft.
