Difference Between Tethered and Untethered Jailbreak

Tethered vs Untethered Jailbreak

If you have an iPhone but you do not want to be limited by the restrictions set by Apple, you have probably looked up on how to jailbreak your device. This is a process that modifies the software of the iPhone to remove said restrictions but voids the warranty of your device. There are two types of jailbreaking, the tethered jailbreak and untethered jailbreak. The main difference between the tethered and untethered jailbreak is how you boot your device. With an untethered jailbreak, the effect is permanent, so you can reboot your device without any problem. With a tethered jailbreak, the effect does not persist through reboots and you need to connect your iPhone to a computer and boot using the jailbreaking software.

As you may have already deduced, untethered jailbreak is the more convenient between the two. You don’t need to worry about your battery running out; because if it does or your phone reboots for any other reason and you used a tethered jailbreak, you are left without a phone.

Some people use tethered jailbreaks because they often come out much sooner than untethered jailbreaks, which are much harder to create. When Apple updates their operating system, the tethered jailbreak is the first one to appear; so people that want to update right away go for the tethered jailbreak but switch to the untethered jailbreak once it comes out.

Tethered jailbreak is not really for everybody since there is the risk of your phone not working on you. If you always carry around a spare phone or if you always have your laptop with you, the problem is reduced but you will still have the annoyance of switching to the other phone or taking out your laptop to boot your iPhone. If you want to jailbreak but want to err on the safe side, go for the untethered jailbreak. Updates don’t really have a whole lot to offer and won’t make or break your iPhone’s usability. You can just wait a few weeks or months, when the untethered jailbreak appears, to update your iPhone to the latest version.

Summary:

  • An untethered jailbreak can boot on its own while a tethered jailbreak needs to be booted from a computer
  • Untethered jailbreaks come out much later than tethered jailbreaks
