Difference between Tai Chi and Wing Chun

Key Difference: Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art tradition. Wing Chun is also a Chinese martial art form, but it is modeled on the recent real world skills and techniques of combat.

The term Tai Chi, means the “supreme ultimate fist”. It is a discipline devoted to achieve unity and harmony between the mind and the body of a person. Tai Chi is highly influenced by the Taoist and Buddhist monasteries, and first originated in China. The basic tenets of Tai Chi include self-defense and maintenance of one’s health. The health here refers to the physical and also mental fitness of a person, which is why Tai Chi comprises of three important modules namely: health, meditation and martial arts.

The fundamental premise of Tai Chi is to be responsive and aware of the opponent’s vital energy, also known as ‘Chi’. Tai Chi teaches a person to anticipate and react to the opponent’s moves and movements, without instigating any on one’s own. It is the knowledge of using an opponent’s vital force to one’s advantage. Keeping this in mind, Tai Chi involves the practice of slow movements, which enable a person to learn the art of balancing himself/herself in all conditions, and also eliminate the risk of falling.

Wing Chun, or Wing Tsun, is the latest Chinese martial art form that has been widely embraced by martial arts followers and enthusiasts all over the world. Contrary to popular beliefs, this style of martial arts is not at all about showboating. Instead, it aims at displaying the significant physical traits of strength and courage in a person. Wing Chun can be learned by people of any age, gender, nationality, creed, etc. In fact, the founder of Wing Chun was a Chinese woman, whose name was Ng. Mui.

Apart from providing skills of combat, defensive strategies, mental qualities like fortitude, freedom and strength of character, Wing Chun also provides multiple health benefits to one and all. Enhancing body attributes like balance and flexibility, Wing Chun helps a person in attaining a desired physique, streamlining one’s focus, aggression and energy, development of will power, inner strength, character, etc. Some people have also known to be benefited in terms of weaning of addictive habits such as smoking, alcoholism, drugs, etc., with the help of Wing Chun.
