IIT and IIM are both centers of excellence in the field of higher education in India. That is the only similarity between IIT or Indian Institutes of Technology and IIM or Indian Institutes of Management, if there is any. IIT
IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology and is a dream of every student who wishes to pursue a career in engineering and technology. IIT’s were established by the government with the intent of imparting quality education in the field of engineering to prepare a skilled workforce to give important contribution in the field of social and economic development of the country. At present there are 15 IIT’s at different locations in the country and all are autonomous bodies that conduct a Joint Entrance Examination after 10+2 to select students for various streams of engineering. Selected students pursue a 4 year course divided into 8 semesters and become qualified engineers after passing the exams.
IIM
IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management and imparts quality education in the field of management to prepare world class managers that are industry ready and take up all challenges of business. IIM’s give away degree known as MBA that stands for Masters in Business Administration. At present there are 7 IIM’s in the country. Though there are many more institutions producing MBA’s in the country, a degree from any of the IIM’s is considered to be a guarantee for a very successful and satisfying career. A student needs to clear a Common Entrance Test, known as CAT for admission into various IIM’s. The duration of an MBA course is 2 years and it can be taken after doing graduation.
