Crossover vs SUV
Traveling on rough terrain has always been taxing to automobiles. To negotiate with this type of terrain with an ill-suited vehicle invites disasters and inconveniences. However, a type of vehicle is made for driving on or off the road; this type of vehicle is called an off-road vehicle. Off-road vehicles are capable of driving off paved or gravel surfaces. These vehicles are distinguished from other types by having deep and open treads, as well as having a flexible suspension, and some of this type uses caterpillar tracks. One of the most common uses of this type of vehicle is for sightseeing in areas that are away from the pavement. Because these vehicles have high clearance and traction, they are able to access paths with rough and low traction surfaces such as trails, forest roads, and dunes.
One of the first of the off-road vehicles came from the idea of a French military engineer named Adolphe Kégresse while working for Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Kégresse designed a rubber caterpillar track which he named as a Kégresse track. The track uses a flexible belt which can be fitted to a conventional automobile and turn it into a half-track which makes the vehicle run smoother on rough and soft ground. In 1917, after the Russian Revolution, Kégresse returned to France where the system he designed was used on Citroën cars for both off-road purposes and for military vehicles. Some of these vehicles were given to overland expeditions, those being sponsored by Citroën, for crossing North Africa and Central Asia. In the following years, these vehicles were made more comfortable, and manufacturers added more luxuries to them. These vehicles soon evolved into SUVs, descendants from both commercial and military vehicles, like the World War II Jeep and the Land Rover. They further evolved into the Crossover vehicle which sacrifices utility and off-road capabilities in exchange for better on-road performance and luxury.
The SUV, or Sport Utility Vehicle, is built on a light-truck chassis. These vehicles often come equipped with four-wheel drive which allow all four wheels of the vehicle to receive torque from the engine simultaneously which provides better control for both on-road and off-road uses. This also reflects its ability to be used as an off-road vehicle. But not all four-wheel drive vehicles are considered an SUV. Certain SUVs have the towing capacity of pickup trucks, and some of them have passenger carrying features of a minivan or a sedan. There are also some SUVs which can be considered as light trucks and share the same automobile platform of pickup trucks. SUVs have the characteristics of having high ground clearance, being upright, having a boxy body, and a high hip-point.
The newer Crossover vehicle is built on a car platform and combines some of the features of an SUV. These design features include tall interior packaging, high hip-point, high ground clearance, or the all-wheel drive capability. It also includes other features of a passenger vehicle platform, independent rear suspension, better on-road handling, and better fuel economy. These types of vehicles only have light off-road capabilities because of the change in design.
