Difference Between Clipping and Culling

Clipping vs. Culling

Clipping and culling are mainly used in computer graphics and are used more frequently when framing computer games. Both clipping and culling are used for adding beauty to the graphics and also augmenting the visual effects. The techniques used in clipping and culling are almost similar but with many differences which are hard for a common man to understand.

Culling is a process of removing objects that are not seen by the camera from the frame. This means that it leaves fewer polygons for Papervision engines to process. Clipping is the process by which the polygons that extend past the camera are picked or culled. Clipping allows all polygons to disappear.

In video games, more of the clipping method is used than the culling technique. By using the clipping technique, the video quality is increased and the frame rate is improved. Moreover, clipping also increases the presentation speed. The clipping technique is used when the objects are partially visible.

Culling is mainly used for removing a hidden surface in the graphics processor. Culling comes in two types – MCCAM Cull operation and Subpixel Cull operation. There are many terms associated with culling like face culling and occlusion culling.

Clipping can add to the computer game’s visual quality. When compared to culling, clipping establishes the highest polygon. Clipping is done just ahead of rasterization. Most of the time, clipping is done by the graphics system. Culling is known to reject objects completely outside the viewing volume. Culling is usually done by application and is done just before transformation and lighting.
